If the student has selected a major, but not a transfer institution, you can help the student select courses that not only satisfy general education requirements and major-specific requirements, but which will also transfer to multiple institutions. You can also help the student research transfer institutions.
When advising a student who has selected a major but not a transfer institution, follow these steps:
| Step 1: |
Show the student the South Carolina Statewide Transfer and Articulation Agreement
|
Statewide transfer agreements are designed to enhance the transfer of academic credits by promoting a seamless transition for the students from one institution to another.
|
and help the student determine if the selected major is included in any of those agreements.
Also, use the Search for Transfer Agreements function to determine if any other Transfer Agreement is applicable to the selected major.
Remind students that SC TRAC is a transfer tool and should be used in addition to one-on-one advising.
|
| Step 2: |
If the student wants to take a major-specific course, use the Search for Equivalencies function to learn how courses transfer to participating institutions.
|
| Step 3: |
A student may want to consider selecting a transfer institution based on the greatest number of transferable credits. This information can easily be determined by asking the student to create a Course Equivalency Map
| Once your Course History has been entered or imported, the Equivalency Map shows how your courses would transfer to another institution. |
for all of the institutions where the student might transfer.
Note: Students must have an account and enter their Course History
| The Course History is a list of all the courses you have taken, including credit and grade information. |
in order to create a Course Equivalency Map.
| Once your Course History has been entered or imported, the Equivalency Map shows how your courses would transfer to another institution. |
|
| Step 4: |
Another useful tool for narrowing the college search process is the Transfer Profile database on SC TRAC. Encourage the student to use the Search for Transfer Profile function to research institutions, obtain contact information, and learn about specific transfer and admissions policies.
|
| Step 5: |
Once a student has considered all available information, the student is ready to make a decision. A suggested next step would be for the student to contact the transfer institution's Admissions Office to schedule a campus visit. The student should also find out when to apply for admission and become aware of any admissions deadlines. Some institutions require students to apply for admission 6-12 months before transferring. |
