Students With a Transfer Institution

Advising Students With a Transfer Institution

If a student has not selected a college major but has selected a transfer institution, you can assist the student in selecting courses that will transfer to that institution.

Follow these steps to help the student ensure a smooth transfer:

Step 1: Show the student the courses included in the South Carolina List of Universally Transferable Courses and explain how these courses transfer to any public institution in South Carolina.

Also, use the Search for Transfer Agreements function to review other Transfer Agreements applicable to the selected transfer institution.

Recommend that the student register for courses as soon as possible and check with an academic advisor if recommended courses are unavailable.

Step 2: Help the student to select a major. To assist students with finding an area of interest and a major, recommend that the student do the following:
Step 3: Encourage the student to create a Course Equivalency Map for the institution where the student plans to transfer.  Remind the student to update the map at the end of each semester as courses are completed successfully.

Note: A student must have an account and enter his/her Course History in order to create a Course Equivalency Map.

Step 4: Encourage the student to use the Search for Transfer Profile function to research the transfer institution, obtain its contact information, and learn about specific transfer and admissions policies.

Step 5: Once a student has considered all of the available information, a suggested next step would be for the student to contact the transfer institution's Admissions Office to schedule a campus visit. The student should also find out when to apply for admission and become aware of any admissions deadlines. Some institutions require students to apply for admission 6-12 months before transferring.
