I Know My Major, But Not Where I Want to Transfer

Transfer Tip: It is important to remember that each transfer institution makes the final determination of how many and which credits transfer. Credits that transferred to a previous institution may or may not transfer or count toward a degree at another institution. The only way to know for sure is to ask your academic counselor or advisor and to get an agreement in writing.

I know my major, but not where I want to transfer.

Transferring from one higher education institution to another may seem simple at first glance. After all, isn’t a major the same regardless of where you attend? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Each college and university develops its own curriculum and degree requirements. For this reason, make sure you are aware of the degree requirements both at your current institution and at the college or university where you plan to transfer. Doing your homework now will eliminate the need to repeat courses later.

Follow these steps before you register for courses:

Step 1:

Schedule an appointment with a transfer advisor and discuss the course requirements for the major at your current institution and at the institution where you plan to transfer.

Step 2:

Consider taking courses included in the list of Universally Transferable Courses or the appropriate Statewide Transfer Block. All college majors have specific requirements and it is your responsibility to work with an advisor to select appropriate courses as they relate to your chosen major.

Step 3:

Use the Search for Equivalencies function to learn how courses transfer to participating institutions.

Step 4:

After you understand how courses will transfer, then begin the registration process.

Step 5:

After you complete your semester’s coursework, create a Course History in SC TRAC.
