Students With a Major and Transfer Institution

Advising Students with a Major and a Transfer Institution

For a student who has selected both a major and a transfer institution, course options are dictated by general education and major-specific requirements found in the college catalogs of both institutions.

Follow these steps to help the student ensure a smooth transfer:

Step 1: Show the student the South Carolina Statewide Transfer and Articulation Agreements and help the student determine if any courses included in the list are required for the selected major.

Use the Search for Transfer Agreements function to determine if a Transfer Agreement is applicable to the selected major and transfer institution.

Remind students that SC TRAC is a transfer tool and should be used in addition to one-on-one advising.

Step 2: If no Transfer Agreement exists between the student's current and transfer institution for the selected major, use the Search for Equivalencies function to verify that the student's selected courses transfer.

Step 3: Assist the student in registering for courses.

Step 4: Encourage the student to create a Course Equivalency Map for the institution where the student plans to transfer. Remind the student to update the map at the end of each semester as courses are completed successfully.

Note: Students must have an account and enter their Course History in order to create a Course Equivalency Map.

Step 5: Encourage the student to use the Search for Transfer Profile function to research the transfer institution, obtain its contact information, and learn about its specific transfer and admissions policies.

Step 6: Once a student has considered all available information, a suggested next step would be for the student to contact the transfer institution's Admissions Office to schedule a campus visit. The student should also find out when to apply for admission and become aware of any admissions deadlines. Some institutions require students to apply for admission 6-12 months before transferring.
